Rosen, Lankford, Graham, Booker Ask State Department to Surge Internet Access for the Iranian People

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV), James Lankford (R-OK), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) sent a letter urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to quickly surge support forefforts that will help the Iranian people maintain access to the internet, particularly in light of the regime’s recent clamp down on internet freedom during the massive protests across Iran the last several weeks.

“We write today in defense of America’s long-standing and bipartisan commitment to support programs that enable internet freedom for the people of Iran, which is more important than ever as the people of Iran protest against the regime in record numbers,” the Senators wrote. “In light of the current events in Iran, we urge the administration to surge resources to quickly enable critical internet freedom support to the largest pro-American population in the Muslim Middle East.”

Senator Rosen has been a strong leader working to counter threats from Iran’s regime and its terrorist proxies and support the Iranian people in their democratic aspirations. She recently introduced a bipartisan bill to sanction the Iran-backed Houthis for human rights violations. Senator Rosen has also led bipartisan efforts to freeze Iranian assets, tighten sanctions on the regime, and designate the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization. Last congress, Senator Rosen pushed legislation to ensure Iran’s regime cannot benefit from its petroleum trade.
