Rosen Applauds Lipstadt Nomination for Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Advancing Out of Committee with Bipartisan Support

Rosen Calls for Immediate Senate Confirmation of Dr. Lipstadt to Confront Rising Global Antisemitism

Rosen-Backed Bipartisan Legislation to Elevate the Special Envoy to Rank of Ambassador was Signed Into Law in January 2021

WASHINGTON DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), co-chair of the Senate Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, applauded the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for advancing Dr. Deborah Lipstadt’s nomination to serve as Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism with bipartisan support. Senator Rosen called on the full U.S. Senate to confirm Lipstadt as soon as possible.

“At a time of rising antisemitism around the world, we need dedicated leadership in place to ensure that the United States remains a global leader in pushing back against hatred targeting the Jewish community,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “Dr. Deborah Lipstadt is a highly qualified nominee who will call out antisemitism no matter where it comes from. I’m glad to see her nomination finally advance out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with bipartisan support, and I urge the Senate to swiftly bring her nomination to the floor for a vote.”

Senator Rosen has been a vocal supporter of elevating this critical role and filling this vacancy. Last Congress, Senator Rosen helped introduce bipartisan legislation, which was convirtió en ley in January 2021, to elevate the Special Envoy to the rank of Ambassador at the State Department. This is the first time in history this position will hold the rank of Ambassador. Last year, Senator Rosen led 22 of her Senate colleagues in a letter to President Biden urging him to expeditiously nominate a qualified Ambassador to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. 

Dr. Deborah Lipstadt was nominated by President Biden in July. Dr. Lipstadt is an American historian and Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. In 1994, she was appointed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, and she served two terms.

Senator Rosen introduced Dr. Lipstadt during her Senate Foreign Relations Committee nomination hearing last month. 

As the third-ever Jewish woman elected to the Senate and a former synagogue president, Senator Rosen has been an outspoken advocate for combating antisemitism in the United States and around the world. She co-founded the Senate Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism in 2019 with Senator James Lanford (R-OK).
