These records are often required to access critical government benefits and services like medical treatment, unemployment assistance, and emergency housing. NARA has projected that the military records backlog would include more than 84,000 cases just this month. In the letter, Senator Rosen and her colleagues point out that the<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2022\/12\/16\/rosen-helps-pass-bipartisan-national-defense-bill-containing-key-nevada-priorities-several-rosen-led-provisions\/\"><em>National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023<\/em><\/a>, which she helped pass, authorized $60 million for NARA to address the records backlog by digitizing service records to improve response times for requests from veterans for their military service records. Due to staffing shortages during the pandemic, NARA staff struggled to respond to veterans\u2019 requests for documents and the backlog climbed to 600,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe write to express our concern regarding reports of ongoing delays in constituents receiving their military service records from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC),\u201d <strong>wrote the Senators.<\/strong> \u201cWhile we recognize and commend NARA for the significant strides it has made to address this backlog, we must ensure all incoming requests are still met with a timely response and that this does not occur again in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full letter can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/NARA-Vets-Military-Records-Letter-Final-.pdf\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senator Rosen is a leader in supporting our nation\u2019s veterans. She recently led colleagues in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2023\/09\/28\/rosen-leads-bipartisan-group-of-women-senators-urging-administration-to-recognize-female-veterans-combat-service-open-access-to-benefits\/\">bipartisan letter<\/a> urging the Biden Administration to identify and amend military records of hundreds of women veterans who deployed alongside Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq to ensure they accurately reflect their combat service. Senator Rosen also secured authorization for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2023\/03\/14\/as-a-result-of-rosen-led-push-new-reno-veterans-hospital-included-in-presidents-budget\/\">new VA hospital in Reno<\/a> and Nevada\u2019s first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2023\/04\/21\/rosen-secures-first-ever-veteran-business-outreach-center-in-nevada\/\">Veteran Business Outreach Center<\/a>.
