In July, the Food and Drug Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2023\/07\/13\/rosen-applauds-approval-of-first-over-the-counter-birth-control-after-calling-on-fda-to-swiftly-approve\/\">approved<\/a> Opill as the first daily oral contraceptive available without a prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccess to contraception, as well as education about it, increases readiness and improves quality of life for our servicemembers and their families,\u201d <strong>wrote the senators.<\/strong> \u201cWe write to urge the Department of Defense (DoD) to expand TRICARE coverage to include OTC contraceptives with no cost-sharing or prescription requirement. We also request the DoD stock OTC contraceptives in military treatment facilities, pharmacies, and exchanges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/perspectives\/PEA2227-1.html\">40 percent<\/a> of active duty female servicemembers face limited or no access to reproductive care where they are stationed. This poses serious challenges for the approximately 1.6 million women of reproductive age \u2013 including servicemembers, retirees, and their families \u2013 who rely on the Military Health System to access essential health care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The full text of the letter can be found <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/final-dod-opill-coverage-letter.pdf\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senator Rosen has been a leader in the fight to defend women\u2019s reproductive rights. Earlier this year, she helped introduce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2023\/05\/16\/rosen-cortez-masto-help-introduce-bill-to-protect-servicemembers-access-to-reproductive-health-care-services\/\"><em>Protecting Service Members and Military Families\u2019 Access to Health Care Act<\/em><\/a> to codify the Pentagon\u2019s policy to ensure servicemembers and their families can access reproductive health care, regardless of the state in which they are stationed. The introduction of that bill came after Senator Rosen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/2023\/03\/27\/rosen-colleagues-send-letter-urging-pentagon-to-provide-travel-leave-for-servicemembers-seeking-reproductive-care\/\">urged<\/a> Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to provide servicemembers and their families travel support and paid leave to access reproductive health care services following the Supreme Court overturning <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.
