WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/strong> \u2013 Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Aging Committee, joined with eleven of her Senate colleagues in a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Alex Azar urging HHS to take action to protect seniors from COVID-19. In their letter to HHS, the members pointed out that older Americans are at much higher risk of deadly complications related to COVID-19.

\n\u201cAs members of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, we write to highlight the unique health needs of the more than 50 million older adults in the United States in light of the Department\u2019s ongoing efforts to protect Americans from the COVID-19 outbreak,\u201d the Senators wrote.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOlder adults and those with chronic medical conditions are at particular risk and may require more attention than others during a surge capacity event such as a COVID-19 outbreak. In recognition of age and health conditions affecting susceptibility, it is important that the Department consider the unique health needs of older Americans in all aspects of the domestic response, from hospital preparedness to the impact of drug shortages to vaccine development,\u201d continued the Senators.<\/strong>

\nBACKGROUND:<\/strong><\/u> Last week during a Senate HELP Committee Hearing, Senator Rosen questioned health experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the opportunity to utilize telehealth as a means of treatment for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Senator Rosen also expressed support for ensuring that health insurance limitations are not an obstacle to patients seeking telehealth care.<\/p>\n

Senator Rosen has taken the following actions in the last month:
\n\u2022    Voted to pass an $8.3 billion emergency funding package<\/a> to support federal, state, and local health agencies, to invest in vaccine and treatment development, and support affected small businesses with loan assistance.
\n\u2022    Participated in a hearing as a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on the federal response to COVID-19 and preparations for future global pandemics, and questioned officials from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Homeland Security.
\n\u2022    Questioned health experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the opportunity to utilize telehealth as a means of treatment for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Senator Rosen also expressed support for ensuring that health insurance limitations are not an obstacle to patients seeking telehealth care.
\n\u2022    Questioned witnesses from the Department of Transportation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on the role of aviation in containing the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 during a hearing hosted by the Senate Commerce Committee\u2019s Subcommittee on Aviation and Space.
\n\u2022    Joined with colleagues in sending a number of letters to officials at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Department of Labor (DOL)<\/a>, the U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>, and the Department of Education (ED)<\/a>, requesting information on how the departments will be responding to cases of the coronavirus.
\n\u2022    Last week, representatives from Senator Rosen\u2019s office attended a briefing with Governor Sisolak and members of Nevada\u2019s public health community to discuss the state\u2019s preparedness for potential cases of coronavirus in Nevada.
