The resolution follows the move by President Trump, on the first day of his second term, to grant full, complete, and unconditional pardons to over 1,500 people charged with committing crimes in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, and to commute the sentences of 14 others, including leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, far-right militias. Among those pardoned by Trump were 169 people who pled guilty to assaulting police officers on January 6<sup>th.&nbsp; <\/sup>During the siege of the Capitol that day, over 80 U.S. Capitol Police Officers were assaulted, as well as over 60 officers from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The senators\u2019 resolution, <em>Condemning the pardons for individuals who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol Police Officers,<\/em> simply states: \u201cResolved, That the Senate disapproves of any pardons for individuals who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol Police officers.\u201d This week, Senator Murray will seek unanimous consent on the Senate floor to pass the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unconscionable that one of President Trump\u2019s first actions in office was to pardon criminals who violently attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021,\u201d <strong>said Senator<\/strong> <strong>Rosa<\/strong>. \u201cA number of these convicted felons attacked police officers and injured them. It should not be a partisan issue to fully condemn these actions and President Trump\u2019s pardons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump is pardoning violent criminals who assaulted police officers and attempted to overturn a fair and free election,\u201d<strong> said<\/strong> <strong>Senator Cortez Masto<\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>\u201cThis is an insult to law enforcement across the country and an endorsement of political violence. The very least my Republican colleagues can do to back law enforcement is to support this resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Columbia, approximately 1,572 defendants have been federally charged with crimes associated with the attack of the U.S. Capitol on January 6<sup>th<\/sup>. This includes approximately 598 charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding law enforcement agents or officers or obstructing those officers during a civil disorder, including approximately 171 defendants charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer.
