I will continue my efforts to see that all of Nevada\u2019s communities have access to the care they deserve.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><u1_p><\/u1_p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:start\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><b><u><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">BACKGROUND:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/u><\/b>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">Senator Rosen is a co-sponsor of the&nbsp;<i>Rural Physician Workforce Production Act<\/i>.<b>&nbsp;<\/b>This legislation would lift the current caps on Medicare GME payments to rural hospitals. This would help eliminate the disadvantage that rural hospitals face when recruiting new medical professionals. The bill also would allow Medicare to reimburse urban hospitals that send residents to train at rural health care facilities during a resident rotation, and it would establish a per-resident payment initiative to ensure rural hospitals have the resources to bring on additional residents.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><u1_p><\/u1_p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:start\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">Senator Rosen is also a co-sponsor of the&nbsp;<i>Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act<\/i>&nbsp;which would increase GME slots by 2,000 per year. Current law provides for an increase of up to 200 positions per fiscal year beginning in FY2023, with a total increase of 1,000 positions (up to 25 per hospital). This bill provides for an additional increase of 2,000 positions per fiscal year from FY2023-FY2029; during this period, each hospital may receive up to 75 additional positions in total under the bill and current law.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><u1_p><\/u1_p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:start\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">In 2019, Senator Rosen sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) requesting a report on graduate medical education (GME) residency programs and physician shortages.&nbsp;GAO completed&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-21-391\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">the report&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">this summer.&nbsp;Some of the report\u2019s key findings include:<\/span><\/span><\/span><u1_p><\/u1_p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">70% of hospitals train more residents than Medicare funds, indicating a training capacity greater than current caps.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">20% of hospitals train below at least one of their caps, and 11% were under both.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">This equates to 2% of Medicare-eligible cap slots going unfilled, which is 1400-1500 slots (depending on Direct or Indirect GME funding).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">Hospitals under their caps are generally smaller and in rural areas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><u1_p><\/u1_p><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">Hospitals may reallocate slots to other hospitals, and GAO found that around 40 percent of hospitals have used this option.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">###<\/span><\/span><u1_p><\/u1_p><\/span><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LAS VEGAS, NV&nbsp;\u2013 Today, U.S. Senator Jacky&nbsp;Rosen&nbsp;(D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), visited Cano Health Center in Las Vegas to discuss her work to address the doctor shortage in Nevada. \u201cNevada\u2019s shortage of medical providers has left many communities in our state without proper access to care,\u201d&nbsp;said [&hellip;]<\/p>","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[18],"class_list":["post-1846","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-press_release","tag-health-care"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.9 -
