The Caucus\u2019 mission is to work to enhance access to palliative care services and improve the quality of life of millions of Americans managing serious illnesses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:11px; margin-bottom:16px\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"color:black\">In July, the Senate Comprehensive Care Caucus <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/es\/rosen-leads-comprehensive-care-caucus-introduction-bipartisan-bills\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\">introduced two pieces of legislation<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"color:black\">:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-top:11px; margin-bottom:16px\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">los <i>Expanding Access to Palliative Care Act, <\/i>would create a demonstration project in Medicare to allow palliative care&nbsp;to be covered&nbsp;concurrently with curative treatments for patients with serious illness or injury. Currently, patients on Medicare can only access palliative care through hospice. This legislation would provide&nbsp;comprehensive palliative care&nbsp;services much earlier in the course of illness, improving quality of life for the patient and their family and often also improving outcomes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:11px; margin-bottom:16px\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"color:black\">los&nbsp;<i>Improving Access to Transfusion Care for Hospice Patients Act of 2021<\/i>&nbsp;would carve out payment for transfusion services within the hospice&nbsp;Medicare&nbsp;benefit, billing Medicare for transfusion separately. Patients needing this care&nbsp;would be able to&nbsp;continue to receive it outside of the hospice bundle, while&nbsp;still receiving&nbsp;full hospice benefits.&nbsp;Currently, many patients needing transfusions to maintain quality of life (due to conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma) often wait much longer to opt&nbsp;into hospice because they&nbsp;can&nbsp;lose access to&nbsp;transfusion&nbsp;care&nbsp;when they do so, given that such care currently is paid for out of a capped hospice benefit amount.
