WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/strong> \u2013 Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released a statement applauding the Department of Interior\u2019s announcement<\/a> that each of Nevada\u2019s 17 counties will receive Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) payments totaling $27,250,038, an increase from last year. These payments will be used by local governments to help offset the costs of services and infrastructure that counties provide on federal public lands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI applaud the Department of Interior for providing these payments to the state of Nevada,\u201d dijo el Senador Rosen.<\/strong> \u201cThese funds will be used to support essential services \u2013 especially in our rural communities \u2013 such as law enforcement, education, emergency services, health care, and road maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n

BACKGROUND:<\/strong><\/u> PILT payments are federal payments to local governments that help offset losses in property taxes due to non-taxable federal lands within their boundaries. The payments are made annually for tax-exempt federal lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service and for federal water projects and some military installations. Earlier this year, Senator Rosen filed an appropriations request for full funding of the PILT program in FY20. Last Congress, then-Congresswoman Rosen filed similar requests to the Appropriations Committee in support of the PILT program.<\/p>\n
