Rosen Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Legislation to Prevent Surprise Medical Billing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, announced her co-sponsorship of the STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act, bipartisan legislation to protect patients from surprise billing in emergency medical situations, and when receiving care in an in-network facility.

“Far too many families in Nevada, and across our country have experienced surprise billing when it comes to their medical care,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “I’m co-sponsoring the bipartisan STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act because the last thing patients should have to worry about when receiving emergency care is the burden of additional surprise medical bills. Protections should also be in place when patients receive care at in-network facilities.  I will continue to support policy that protects patients and improves out-of-pocket costs.”

BACKGROUND: The bipartisan STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act, introduced by Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) would also mandate new transparency on deductibles, requiring insurers to clearly list in-network and out-of-network deductibles on insurance cards. This legislation would also require insurers and medical providers to give patients expected out-of-pocket costs for specific health services within 48 hours of request.
