During Immigrant Heritage Month, Rosen Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Legislation to Create National Museum Honoring American Latinos

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced her co-sponsorship of the National Museum of the American Latino Act, bipartisan legislation that would authorize the Smithsonian Institution to create a museum honoring American Latinos.

“The Latino community in Nevada, and across our country has made countless contributions to our history, culture, and way of life,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “I’m proud to join my colleagues in supporting legislation that will honor the rich history of the Latino American community by creating a museum that will both educate and empower current and future generations.”

BACKGROUND: In 2003, a bill was introduced to study the creation of National Museum of the American Latino. In 2008, with Presidential and Congressional leadership, a 23-member Commission was established to study the viability of a museum. In 2011, the Commission’s work culminated in a final report that detailed that the creation of a museum on the National Mall was indeed feasible.

This bill would act on the Commission’s report and put into motion the process of establishing a Latino Museum – similar to those that established other Smithsonian museums.

Last Congress, then-Congresswoman Rosen co-sponsored this legislation in the House of Representatives.
