WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, joined Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) in introducing the Promoting United States Wireless Leadership Act of 2020. This bipartisan legislation would work to protect our country’s national security and global competitiveness by promoting U.S. leadership in international wireless standards-setting bodies.
“Our global economic competitiveness depends on our participation in setting the standards for the next generation of communications networks,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “Nevada is an innovative state and will depend on these networks to push us to the future in everything from computing to telemedicine. I will continue to support legislation that ensures that the United States is at the forefront of innovation so that we continue to lead the world in wireless technology.”
BACKGROUND: The bipartisan Promoting United States Wireless Leadership Act of 2020 would ensure the U.S. is a leader in the technology standards-setting process, crucial to winning the international race to 5G wireless technology. First-mover advantage in setting standards and rules can give a powerful edge to U.S. businesses. The bill would require the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to coordinate executive branch efforts and offer technical expertise to encourage trusted companies (i.e., companies determined to pose no national security threat) and stakeholders to participate in setting standards for 5G and future generations of wireless communications networks.
