ICYMI: Rosen Slams Trump Administration for Cancelling Approval of High-Speed Internet Funding for Nevada, Vows to Block Commerce Nominees Until Funding Is Restored

In Case You Missed It – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) condemned the Trump Administration’s reckless decision to rescind Nevada’s approval to receive federal high-speed internet funding through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. Senator Rosen blasted the move, calling it a betrayal of Nevada’s rural communities and a direct threat to the state’s ability to close the digital divide. The BEAD program, which Rosen helped create and fund in a bipartisan effort, was set to deliver $416 million to Nevada to expand internet access to the hardest-to-reach parts of the state. Now, under new Trump Administration guidance, that approval has been rescinded — delaying critical broadband infrastructure projects and jeopardizing progress for communities in need. In response, Rosen is formally blocking expedited consideration of four Commerce Department nominees who oversee or are involved with broadband policy decisions.

  • The Trump administration rescinded funds allocated to Nevada for high-speed internet projects, forcing Nevada and other states to reapply for grants under a new set of criteria.
  • The National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced Friday a new policy notice with critical reforms to the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program originally established under the Biden administration’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
  • BEAD provided $42.45 billion of funding through state grants to build high-speed internet, and Nevada was approved to receive $416 million since January 2025, according to Sen. Jacky Rosen’s office.
  • Rosen, D-Nev., said in a statement she was “beyond outraged” about the Trump administration moving the goal posts and rescinding the funding she helped secure for Nevada.

Nevada Independent: Trump admin rescinds, resets Nevada’s half-billion-dollar fiber internet buildout
By Gabby Birenbaum

  • Nevada was one of three states to have its proposal fully approved by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), unlocking the full amount that the federal government had designated for the state under the 2021 Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program.
  • The state had already selected more than 50,000 locations and provisionally awarded 19 providers to build out broadband infrastructure across the state, which ranks 20th in internet connectivity. In late April, Nevada broadband director Brian Mitchell said construction was set to start this summer — an enormous milestone for a program that had spent years in the bureaucratic approvals process.
  • Rosen, who has a computer programming background and has made broadband expansion one of her flagship issues, said she would maintain her hold until Nevada receives its BEAD funds.

  • On Friday, Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration under Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick released its revised rules for the $42.45 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program. The new policy rescinded Biden-era approval of final spending plans from the three states that had received it, including Nevada, and will require all states and territories to conduct an additional round of bidding.

KTNV Las Vegas: Rosen condemns Trump Admin for rescinding high-speed internet funding for Nevada

Anchor: “New federal guidance could slow down a program to expand internet services across the U.S., including here in Nevada. Last June, the Department of Commerce approved $417 million for Nevada to deploy high-speed internet in underserved communities. Friday, the department handed down new guidance that will put the brakes on Nevada’s plans. Construction was set to begin this summer. State officials say they’re reviewing the updated guidance and have no further comment. Senator Jacky Rosen was one of the senators who helped create the program.”
