WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced the introduction of her Carson City Public Land Correction Act, which will help promote conservation, improve public lands management, and expand economic development opportunities in Carson City, Nevada. As the state with the highest percentage of public land in the nation, Nevada relies on federal legislation to make land available for development, including affordable housing, and other public purposes, like flood and wildfire mitigation, storm water improvement, and recreation. Companion legislation in the House has been introduced by Representative Mark Amodei (R-NV-2).
“As Nevada continues to grow, we need to make sure that federal lands are being used in a way that best fits the needs of our growing local communities,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “I’ve been working with Mayor Bagwell and local leaders to make sure this bill provides Carson City with additional land to build more housing and commercial buildings, improve infrastructure, and expand access to outdoor recreation, while also ensuring proceeds of land sales go towards much-needed local programs and conservation initiatives. I’ll continue working to pass this bill so we can support commonsense growth in Carson City.”
“This legislation reflects years of collaboration to align federal land management with Carson City’s on-the-ground needs,” said Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell. “By correcting land boundaries and enabling strategic conveyances, this bill will strengthen public safety, improve transportation connectivity, support flood mitigation and wildfire resilience, and give our community the tools it needs to plan responsibly for the future. I appreciate Senator Rosen’s leadership in advancing a solution that benefits both Carson City residents and our federal partners.”
los Carson City Public Land Correction Act would:
- Transfers nearly 1,300 acres of BLM land to Carson City for flood mitigation, recreation, water improvements, and a rifle range.
- Provides land to improve pedestrian safety and transportation infrastructure.
- Makes available 360 acres of BLM land for economic development. Revenue from any sale of this land will be required to stay in Carson City to support wildfire prevention efforts, protection of environmentally sensitive land, educational projects, and wilderness conservation.
- Updates the land management of some parcels previously allocated in the 2009 lands bill for Carson City, based on shifting priorities and changing needs in the community.
As a Senator from the state with the highest percentage of public land in the country, Senator Rosen has worked tirelessly to improve access to and protection of Nevada’s public lands. She introduced the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act, also known as the Washoe County Lands Bill, to expand economic development opportunities and make more land available for housing in Washoe County, support local Tribal communities, increase access to outdoor recreation, and protect public lands. Senator Rosen has also pushed the Energy and Natural Resources Committee to hold a hearing on this critically important bill. Her Pershing County Economic Development and Conservation Act, which would expand protections for and improve the management of federal public lands in Pershing County and create new conservation and recreation opportunities, received a Senate hearing earlier this month.
