ICYMI: Senator Rosen Continues Fighting to Ensure Nevada Families Can See A Doctor, Afford Health Care

WASHINGTON, DC – As Washington Republicans continue to drag on the government shutdown, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) is fighting to ensure hardworking Nevada families can afford their health insurance and be able to see a doctor. Yesterday, Senator Rosen released a statement highlighting data from the Urban Institute showing that 267,000 non-senior veterans who rely on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits will be priced out of health care coverage if Congress does not extend these critical tax credits.

New York Times: These Democrats Could Hold the Key to Ending the Shutdown

  • Moderate Democrats from politically competitive states are always targets in a potential bipartisan deal. Several of them have expressed irritation that the White House had yet to make an effort to win their votes.
  • “The president said he’s willing to talk to us,” said Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada. “Nobody’s phone is ringing. They’re saying they’re talking to us. They haven’t reached out to us at all.”

CNN: Tension builds in Senate as two parties trade barbs with shutdown dragging on

  • As the shutdown stretches into a second week with no offramp in sight, senators made clear on Wednesday that both parties are counting on the other to eventually soften their position in the standoff in order to reopen the government.
  • Asked if Democrats might change their minds if the shutdown drags on and conditions get worse, Sen. Jacky Rosen told CNN she thinks Republicans are the ones who need to cave on their stance of no negotiations on extending enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies until the government reopens, accusing the GOP of “refusing to even have a conversation.”
  • “This is an all of us problem when it comes to our health care premiums, our ability to go to the doctor, and our ability to access health care. So they need to at least open the conversation for us to get our votes,” she said.

Nevada Current: Trusting Trump to negotiate if Dems surrender in shutdown would be ‘naive,’ Rosen says

  • Democratic U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen said Wednesday it would be “a little naive” to vote for a Republican funding plan to reopen the government without first obtaining firm commitments that Republicans will reverse course and extend health insurance subsidies so as to prevent skyrocketing premiums.
  • Preventing cuts to health care subsidies is an urgent priority,  Rosen said during a press call Wednesday. In a few weeks, open enrollment for the health exchange will begin.
  • Nevadans who get insurance through Nevada Health Link are facing a projected average 26% premium rate hike, though the increases could be far greater from many Nevadans.
  • “We’re talking about more than 38,000 people in our state alone losing their coverage right away, all because Washington Republicans refuse to act,” Rosen said. “Let’s be clear, this is going to affect everyone. Not just people on the exchange. Everyone with health insurance is going to see a price hike as a result.”

Nevada Appeal: Rosen: Shutdown could cause spike in health care costs

  • Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen announced Wednesday that the ongoing government shutdown still threatens the expiration of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits and the potential for higher health care costs to Nevadans.
  • Rosen said during a press call from Washington that negotiations between Republicans and Democrats to overcome a budget dispute since the Oct. 1 shutdown so far have been unsuccessful. She emphasized working toward the prevention of a massive spike in health care costs. More than 110,000 Nevadans receive health coverage through the ACA marketplace, the Nevada Health Link. Rosen said approximately 95,000 families can afford their premiums through the enhanced premium tax credits.
  • “The problem is that those enhanced tax credits will expire this year and if Congress fails to act, health care costs could double,” Rosen told reporters. “More than 38,000 people in our state alone could lose their coverage right away, all because Congress refuses to act.”
  • Open enrollment begins Nov. 1, and Rosen said her Democratic colleagues have been trying to work with Senate Republicans to keep health care costs down.

Reporter: “It’s day 8 of the government shutdown and the standoff between Democrats and Republicans on capitol hill continues. Rosen says democrats have been working all year to get republicans to agree to extend tax credits in the affordable care act without success.

Senator Rosen: “So if John Thune thinks that I don’t have to resolve to stand here and stand with Nevadans who need and deserve the dignity of just being able to go to the damn doctor and afford their prescriptions, then Leader Thune doesn’t know who Jacky Rosen is.”
