LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) took part in a community food distribution event at Macedonia Baptist Church in Las Vegas. Senator Rosen was joined by Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV), Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy, and Las Vegas Councilman Cedric Crear to provide food — supplied by Three Square food bank — to members of the community.
“Food insecurity is an issue that has severely impacted Nevada, and particularly now during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Senator Rosen. “Today, I had the opportunity to join incredible Nevada volunteers in providing a helping hand to Nevada families in need of assistance. I am amazed by the resilience and the capacity of Nevadans to work together in times of crisis. In Congress, I will continue working to help ensure that Nevada families have the resources they need to put food on the table and get through to the other side of this pandemic.”
BACKGROUND: Senator Rosen voted in support of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, comprehensive COVID-19 relief legislation, signed into law on March 11, 2021, that:
- Includes $12 billion for key investments in food assistance programs;
- Extends the SNAP benefit increase;
- Continues the pandemic-EBT program to replace meals that children miss when schools are closed; and
- Invests in nutrition programs for women, infants, and children.
Senator Rosen is a co-sponsor of the Expanding SNAP Options Act, legislation that would:
- Require the Secretary of Agriculture to implement online SNAP purchasing in all states,
- Provide $25 million to develop and maintain a secure, easy-to-use online and app-based portal for EBT redemption to support smaller retailers in offering products for online SNAP purchasing,
- And provide $75 million for the creation of a USDA Technical Assistance Center to facilitate online purchasing and use of the portal for smaller retailers, direct-to-consumer farmers, and farmers’ markets, and provide public information about which local vendors participate in SNAP online purchasing,
