Rosen Highlights Devastating Impacts of Republican Medicaid Cuts at Northern Nevada HOPES

RENO, NV – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) visited the new Northern Nevada HOPES health clinic in Reno to discuss the devastating impacts of recent Republican cuts to Medicaid. Senator Rosen toured the facility and then held a press conference alongside Northern Nevada HOPES CEO Sharon Chamberlain and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Faith Whittier to highlight how the cuts — passed as part of the recent “One Big Beautiful Bill” reconciliation package — will threaten care for Nevadans who rely on Medicaid, including over one-third who are children, while also reducing critical funding for hospitals and health centers statewide.

“Medicaid is a critical lifeline for so many families in our state, helping nearly a million Nevadans obtain access to health care,” said Senator Rosen.  “By gutting this critical program, Washington Republicans are taking away this lifesaving care for so many, making it harder for families to access health care. I’ll keep fighting to reverse these cuts and ensure Nevadans have access to affordable, quality medical care.”

“When Medicaid is restricted, people delay care. Preventable conditions escalate. Emergency rooms fill up. And the costs, financial and human, skyrocket,” said Sharon Chamberlain, CEO of Northern Nevada HOPES. “This is not a budget issue. It’s a public health emergency. And let’s be clear: No amount of innovation, no amount of efficiency, can fully offset the damage caused by policies that strip coverage of those that need it most.”

“At Northern Nevada HOPES we see every day that Medicaid is more than a safety net, it’s a lifeline,” said Dr. Faith Whittier, Chief Medical Officer. “For our patients, Medicaid means access to care, stability, and a real chance at a healthier future.”

Senator Rosen has been a steadfast opponent of Republicans’ extreme budget law. In July, she condemned the Senate Republicans’ passage of the extreme so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” Senator Rosen spoke on the Senate floor to oppose this dangerous legislation, warning of its devastating impact on access to health care in Nevada and across the nation. In August, she helped introduce legislation to overturn Washington Republicans’ proposed Medicaid cuts that would take away care from millions of Americans.
