FALLON, NV – Earlier this week, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen visited the construction site for the expansion of the nursing program at Western Nevada College in Fallon, for which she helped secure more than 2.3 million in funding. She also discussed the shortage of nurses in Nevada and her efforts to expand programs to train more nurses. Senator Rosen has introduced bipartisan legislation to address this shortage, which would increase pathways for Licensed Practical Nurses to become Registered Nurse.

Anchor: “Building the new facility is going to cost the college millions — some of which was provided by a federal grant. Senator Jacky Rosen – in a bipartisan effort — helped to secure 2.3 million dollars for WNC.”
Senator Rosen: “Whether they’re young folks just starting out or someone who wants to be trained, we want to have the facilities here for them to learn, and they stay here for their families, where they’re rooted.”
Dangerfield: “For the last six years, the students from Fallon have been working out of a small makeshift clinic off of the library at WNC, and have been required to travel to Carson City to complete their courses. The new facility will be putting an end to some of those struggles — and provide state of the art equipment for students to learn with.”

Senator Rosen: “Without those nurses, without being able to take those calls, if you’re doing telemedicine, telehealth phone calls, they’ll often triage those first calls, send them things to the prescription, to the physician or physician provider physician’s assistant. And they are just critical to our care. We need to fund these programs all around the state and all around our country frankly.”
Anchor: “A study last year from the Nevada Health Workforce said that to meet national employment rates, Nevada would need an additional 4,900 registered nurses. Well, the WNC project is expected to wrap up sometime in August.”
Fox 5 Las Vegas: Rosen working to address career obstacles for potential medical professionals in Nevada

Anchor: “Many students from the Fallon area drive approximately 140 miles round trip to attend classes, labs and clinicals in Carson city. This expansion reduces geographical barriers for students, while increasing educational access and local engagement. Common challenges that Senator Rosen says her ‘Train More Nurses Act’ will address if it passes.”
Senator Rosen: “That passed unanimously in the Senate, last time. We’re trying to get that moving forward so we can put energy into training those nurse educators which are critical to keeping the workforce going. And we also have to think, particularly in our rural and underserved communities, whether it’s nursing, whether it’s dental care, medical care. How do we relieve that financial burden of folks who want to be trained in this to come serve all of our communities.”

The expansion was made possible through $1.2 million in private funding and another $2.3 million in federal investment, brought about by Nevada Senator Jacky Rosen.
On Tuesday, Senator Rosen stopped by to see the ongoing renovation for herself, speaking on how important it is to address the area’s nursing shortage.
“Without those nurses, without being able to take those calls, if you’re doing telemedicine, telehealth, phone calls, they’ll often triage those first calls, send them things to the prescription, to the physician or provider, physician’s assistant, and they are just critical to our care. We need to fund these programs all around the state and all around our country,” Rosen said.
