From Tariffs to Hostile Rhetoric, Donald Trump’s Actions Against Canada are Hurting American Consumers, Businesses, and Tourism
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) introduced a resolution denouncing Donald Trump’s hostile actions towards Canada, which include his cost-raising trade war and harmful rhetoric. The resolution would call for the removal of Trump’s new 50 percent tariffs on Canada and demand that the President stop taking inflammatory actions that needlessly harm the U.S. relationship with Canada, such as the attempted renaming of Lake Ontario and falsely claiming that Canada is the “51st state.” Since the start of the second Trump Administration, international travel to Nevada from Canada – which is the top source of international tourism for the state – has dropped significantly, and reckless tariffs have caused prices to increase dramatically on everyday essentials. Canada is Nevada’s second-largest export market, accounting for $1.6 billion in goods every year.
“In less than two years, Donald Trump’s constant jabs and hostilities towards Canada have alienated one of our closest allies, and Americans are paying the price. Retaliatory tariffs from Canada and a decrease in Canadian visitors to the United States are hurting our tourism sector and Nevada’s economy,” said Senator Rosen. “I am introducing this resolution to put the Senate on record that Trump’s reckless actions are having real, negative consequences on our economy.”
Senator Rosen has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s attacks on Canada. Earlier this month, Senator Rosen released a statement denouncing Trump’s trade war with Canada. She also helped introduce a bill that would repeal Trump’s new 50 percent cost-raising tariffs on Canada. Senator Rosen also met with the Consul General of Canada to discuss the relationship between Nevada and Canada, as well as the importance of Canadian visitors and products to Nevada’s economy.
