Rosen Attends Meeting with Salvadoran Consul General to Discuss Issues Impacting Nevada’s Salvadoran Community

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement after meeting with Salvadoran Consul General Tirso Alberto Sermeño Alvarez.

“The Consul General and I had a productive meeting,” said Senator Rosen. “We discussed the important work he has done over the past decade, to support the Salvadoran community in Nevada and the obstacles and issues currently impacting them. Additionally, several thousand TPS holders in Nevada are from El Salvador, and the Consul General has done incredible work supporting TPS recipients and their families, as well as the larger Salvadorian American community. I am sorry to see the Consul General leave after more than 10 years of service, but I look forward to continuing my efforts to represent and meet the needs of all those who call Nevada home.

BACKGROUND: According to the Center for American Progress, 6,300 people in Nevada are TPS holders from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti. Approximately 5,200 U.S.-born children in Nevada have parents from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti who have TPS.

Senator Rosen last spoke with the Consul General in May of 2020 to check in and hear how the community was doing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After more than a decade of service, Salvadoran Consul General Tirso Alberto Sermeño Alvarez will be leaving his post in Nevada later this month.
