Rosen Statement on Fight to Protect Voting Rights and Restore the Senate

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) voted in favor of passing legislation that included the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and to reform the rules of the Senate to allow for a talking filibuster in order to move this legislation forward. Senator Rosen released the following statement after the Senate failed to advance this package of bills and reform its rules to overcome Republicans’ procedural obstruction.

“The right of every eligible American to vote is the foundation of free and fair elections in this country, and the Senate’s frustrating failure to pass commonsense legislation to protect the freedom to vote and ban dark money leaves our democracy vulnerable,” said Senator Rosen. “Across the nation in the past year, we’ve seen coordinated efforts by Republican state legislatures and governors to make voting harder for millions of Americans while making it easier for bad actors to sabotage future elections – and if we fail to respond, Nevada will also be at risk. The Senate must find a path forward to secure our fundamental right to vote, and I will never stop fighting to defend our democracy.”

Senator Rosen spoke on the Senate floor earlier today in support of protecting voting rights, securing our elections, and reforming the nation’s broken campaign finance system to ban dark money. Senator Rosen is a co-sponsor of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
