Rosen Statement Recognizing Voting Rights Act Anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement in recognition of the 54th anniversary of the enactment of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

“Over 50 years ago, during a time of deep political division, the United States enacted a landmark piece of legislation to ensure that all Americans have an equal opportunity to participate in our democracy,” said Senator Rosen. “Fifty-four years after the Voting Rights Act’s passage, we must recommit ourselves to fight and protect the right to vote for all Americans.”

BACKGROUND: Senator Rosen is a co-sponsor of S. 561, the Voting Rights Amendment Act, legislation which would effectively restore provisions of the law struck down by the Supreme Court in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013. The bill would also implement reforms designed to protect the right to vote.
