Rosen Visits Touro University’s East Las Vegas Vaccine Clinic, Highlights Importance of Getting Vaccinated

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), visited a vaccine clinic hosted by Touro University Nevada, Immunize Nevada, and the City of Las Vegas at the East Las Vegas Community Center. During her visit, Senator Rosen spoke with Touro University faculty and students about their vaccination efforts in Nevada and urged community members to get vaccinated in order to protect their health.

“The COVID-19 vaccines are key to keeping our community safe and defeating this pandemic,” said Senator Rosen. “Today, I was honored to visit Touro University’s vaccination clinic to learn more about their efforts to reach every community in Nevada. The university is also doing important work to make vaccinations accessible to families in Nevada’s Latino community. Vaccines are available for everyone age 12 and up, and I encourage all Nevadans to do their part to keep our community and families safe.”

BACKGROUND: Touro University Nevada (Touro) is Nevada’s largest school of medicine, Nevada’s largest Physician Assistant (PA) school, fully accredited, and a private, non-profit, Jewish-sponsored institution. Opened in 2004, Touro was established to help address critical needs in health care and education and as a resource for community services throughout the state. Touro is now home to nearly 1,500 students, in a wide variety of degree programs including osteopathic medicine, physician assistant studies, education, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and medical health sciences. The university’s Henderson campus includes a multi-specialty health center and a multi-disciplinary Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities.

During the pandemic, Touro university’s faculty and students have provided more than 10,000 vaccines across Southern Nevada.

Student members of Touro’s Latin Medical Students Association (LMSA) administered the vaccine under the supervision of Dr. Rebecca Edgeworth, adjunct professor at Touro University Nevada. Established four years ago, LMSA was created to allow Latino students of similar experiences and backgrounds to share experiences with one another and to bring awareness to the healthcare matters and disparities that affect the Latino and underrepresented communities.

Earlier this year, Rosen voted for and Congress passed the American Rescue Plan which included $20 billion for vaccine research, manufacturing, and distribution.
