WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen’s (D-NV) bipartisan Building Blocks of STEM Act passed the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and is poised to be considered on the Senate floor later this Congress. Senator Rosen also announced her recent co-sponsorship of the 21st Century STEM for Girls and Underrepresented Minorities Act. The bill, introduced by Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) would fund STEM education to engage female students, students of color, LGBTQ students, and students with disabilities to pursue careers in STEM fields.
“Access to STEM education gives our students, particularly young girls and minorities, access to opportunities and career fields they might not otherwise pursue,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m proud to see my bill move out of committee and hope to see it come to the Senate floor for a vote in the near future. I will also continue supporting legislation that will give our students in Nevada, and across our country, access to the education that will prepare them for careers in the 21st century, and I will continue to advocate for investment in STEM education for underrepresented communities.”
BACKGROUND: Earlier this year, Senator Rosen introduced her bipartisan and bicameral Building Blocks of STEM Act which would create and expand upon STEM education initiatives at the National Science Foundation (NSF) for young children, including new research grants to increase the participation of girls in computer science.
