Two Rosen-Backed Bipartisan Bills to Improve Access to Broadband Services, Diversify Transportation Workforce in Nevada Pass Senate Committee Markup

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement applauding the news that the Advancing Critical Connectivity Expands Service, Small Business Resources, Opportunities, Access, and Data Based on Assessed Need and Demand (ACCESS BROADBAND) Act and the Promoting Service in Transportation Act have been voted out of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, of which she is a member. Senator Rosen is a co-sponsor of the bipartisan ACCESS Broadband Act, introduced by Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and is a co-lead of the bipartisan Promoting Service in Transportation Act

“I’m proud to see that two bills I co-sponsored to help improve and diversify our nation’s transportation workforce, and increase access to broadband, have passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee.” said Senator Rosen. “I will continue to champion commonsense policies that help support Nevada’s economy and will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to see that both bipartisan bills pass the Senate.”

BACKGROUND: Last April, Senator Rosen co-sponsored Senator Cortez Masto’s Advancing Critical Connectivity Expands Service, Small Business Resources, Opportunities, Access, and Data Based on Assessed Need and Demand (ACCESS BROADBAND) Act. This bipartisan bill would direct the Department of Commerce to create an Office of Internet Connectivity and Growth (“Office”) within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (“NTIA”). The Office would be responsible for conducting various types of outreach to assist communities in need of greater broadband access and adoption, including holding workshops, developing presentations, and distributing publications.

Last month, Senator Rosen helped introduce the bipartisan Promoting Service in Transportation Act alongside Senators Gary Peters (D-MI), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Cory Gardner (R-CO). This bipartisan bill would authorize the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop a series of national broadcast, digital, and print media public service announcement campaigns to promote job opportunities and improve diversity in the transportation workforce. This bill is endorsed by the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA), Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS), Transport Workers Union (TWU), Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA), the Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC), National Air Transportation Association (NATA), Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and the Helicopter Association International (HAI).
