WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement announcing that the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has received multiple grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling $2,220,000 to be used for research and development on combating environmental disasters in Nevada – specifically aimed at wildfire prevention and oil spill clean-up.
“Nevada holds some of the most majestic and pristine natural regions in the world, and as such, it is our duty to ensure that we protect Nevada’s environment from threats of disaster, both natural and man-made,” said Senator Rosen. “I applaud the National Science Foundation for awarding these grants to UNR so that we can be best prepared for whatever environmental challenge we face, be it a wildfire or an oil spill. I will continue working in Congress to ensure that the Silver State remains protected from environmental disaster and our public lands clean for all to enjoy.”
BACKGROUND: The University of Nevada, Reno has received $2,000,000 from the National Science Foundation to develop a computational platform for wildfire risk management. UNR has also received $220,000 from the NSF for research on cleaning up oil leaks/spills due to offshore oil production and water transportation.
