WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced her re-introduction of the Hire Student Veterans Act, the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs in America Act, and the FRESH AIR for Businesses Act, all bipartisan bills aimed at helping get Americans back to work and supporting our struggling businesses.
“Congress must take action in order to address the jobs crisis our workers and businesses are facing as a result of COVID-19,” said Senator Rosen. “These important bipartisan bills will provide much-needed jobs support to student veterans using GI benefits, invest in training to get Americans back to work in high-paying advanced manufacturing jobs, and help businesses stay afloat by making our indoor spaces safer for customers and workers. I will continue working on commonsense legislation that supports Nevada veterans, workers, and business owners during this difficult time.”
BACKGROUND: The Hire Student Veterans Act, co-led with Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) and co-sponsored by Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), would expand the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) for employers to ensure that student veterans using their GI benefits can take advantage of valuable paid internships or work opportunities while in school. The Hire Student Veterans Act was originally introduced by Rosen in February 2019 and endorsed by the Student Veterans of America.
The Advanced Manufacturing Jobs in America Act, co-led with Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), is a bipartisan bill that would invest in training to get Americans back to work in advanced manufacturing jobs. Specifically, the bill directs the U.S. Department of Labor to initiate pilot projects between local community colleges, state and tribal colleges, local jobs boards, advanced manufacturers, and Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) centers, in order to facilitate education and training programs in the field of advanced manufacturing. The Advanced Manufacturing Jobs in America Act was originally introduced by Rosen in January 2020 and is endorsed by the American Small Manufacturers Coalition, CompTIA, Nevada Industry Excellence, the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry, The Software Alliance, and the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services.
The Filtering and Retrofitting the Environment for Safe and Health Activities Indoors and Revenue (FRESH AIR) for Businesses Act, co-led with Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), is a bipartisan bill that would provide a refundable 50% tax credit to businesses and nonprofit organizations that purchase or upgrade their air ventilation, filtration, and purification systems to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne diseases, to help boost consumer confidence. The credit also covers the costs of standalone air cleaners and purifiers, qualified HVAC installation, and changeable filters. The FRESH AIR for Businesses Act was originally introduced by Rosen in December 2020 and is endorsed by the National Restaurant Association, the International Franchise Association, Small Business Roundtable, the Vegas Chamber, the Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce, the Nevada Urban Chamber of Commerce, the Latin Chamber of Commerce Nevada, Inc., and the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce.
