As we recently saw the devastation with the Hawk Fire in Washoe County, we’re reminded of the alarming reality that some online prediction markets are permitting bets on wildfires. By offering these bets, platforms could be providing an incentive for people to commit arson to make sure their bets are successful or influence fires that have already started.
I’m urging Chairman Mike Selig to put commonsense guardrails in place to prevent people from profiting as wildfires continue to devastate our communities.
